You’re just as excited about the big day as the bride. This will be one of the most important days of your life as well as your daughter’s, and you’ll want to look your best.
The Mother of The Bride plays an important role and even though the bride is the star, there is one person everyone will watch – the Mother of The Bride. At your daughter’s wedding day, you will be on show so choosing your outfit is vitally important. There are a number of things to keep in mind when choosing your outfit here are a few tips to help you find the perfect outfit.
Wedding Etiquette
Wearing white or cream is absolutely out of the question, unless the bride requests it, or is wearing a coloured wedding dress. Likewise, as Mother of The Bride, anything too revealing would be considered a little tasteless. Red is also considered a no no as it is too eye catching.
Co-ordinate the wedding party
You are part of the wedding party, and a coordinated look will work better for photographs and the overall colour scheme of the wedding, than a colour and style completely at odds with the bride and bridesmaids.
Don’t forget to check with the Mother of the Groom. Imagine if you wore the same outfit!
Be Comfortable
As Mother of The Bride you’ll on your feet for a large part of the day as well as attending the ceremony. By the end of the reception you will have been busy for many hours. So, you need an outfit – especially shoes! – that feel good as well as look great. Don’t wear an ill fitting outfit it is always better to concentrate on FIT rather than get hung up on SIZE. An outfit that is too tight will be really uncomfortable by the end of the evening and will never be as flattering as one that is well fitting and correctly sized.
Before making a final decision on your outfit consult your daughter, and let the Mother of The Groom know what you plan to wear.
Formality
Consider how formal the wedding will be. A black-tie wedding may need full-length gown – a pretty, summer dress may be ideal for a beach wedding. If the wedding is a formal affair a suit with match hat, bag and gloves always looks elegant.
Style
Choose a style to suit your figure type. You can disguise many figure faults if you wear a a garment that fits properly and flatters your figure type.
Color
Find a colour that blends with the rest of the wedding party – you will be in the photos. Avoid white, cream, red and black.
Fabric
Unless your daughter is having a beach wedding a solid colour will photograph better than a print. If you want a patterned fabric try something with a self pattern.

Flower Girl Dresses – just as important as your wedding dress
One of the enjoyable tasks, when planning your wedding is choosing your flower girl dress. You may plan to choose a dress that will coordinate with the rest of your bridesmaids, or opt for a simple white dress with coordinating accessories. Whatever your taste, there are a few other considerations. Finding the perfect flower girl dress needs a little thought.
The fashion has changed very little over the years, usually an echo of the bridesmaids in colour, style, or length, some flower girls dresses are scaled down versions of the bridal gown or have similar lace or embellishment. Always “little girl” in style the dress can be short or long. There are as many styles as there are bridal gowns, some are formal, but there is no reason for you not to have a flower girl at a more relaxed wedding such as a beach wedding.
A flower girl’s dress can be white, or be a part of the colour scheme of the bridesmaids dresses. If her dress is white, a coloured sash, hair ribbon or posy may be used to tie it in with the bridesmaids dresses.
Keep in mind the age of your flower girl as younger children will less able to tolerate being hot or cold. Most children will complain or act up if they are in uncomfortable clothes for any length of time, and inevitably that will be at the worst possible moment.
Fabrics for flower girl dresses vary greatly, rich fabrics such as velvet or velour are wonderful, but best confined to winter or autumn weddings. Lighter fabrics are more suitable for a summer or springtime wedding.
Ballet Slippers are probably the best choice for shoes, anything from satin to patent leather will be stylish and comfortable. While tights are great for a winter wedding but are really too warm in summer for a little girl to stay comfortable. Gloves are available in sizes to suit little girls to help keep little hands warm.
Remember – if there are any steps to go up or down, little girls tend pull their dress up if it is too long, a disaster if they are trying to carry a posy as well. Be aware that a very young girl may trip on a long skirt, so it’s best to choose a shorter style. Pantaloons underneath can give length without the danger of tripping. If you are having flower girls of varying ages, you can co-ordinate their dresses much as you can your bridesmaids dresses.
Whatever the style you choose, fabrics that won’t wrinkle, such as satin or velvet will look best by the end of the day.
A good tip is to wait until the last moment to dress your flower girl. If she is very young, and you can afford it, you may want to buy two dresses so you are sure to have a clean one for the photos.

Choosing the right Wedding Lingerie is as important as the selection of your wedding dress. You want your wedding day to be truly memorable, so don’t skimp on your Wedding Lingerie. You’ll find information here to help you choose the style of Wedding Lingerie that will enhance your Wedding Dress and make you feel fabulous.
The style of your wedding dress will dictate your Wedding Lingerie, but you still need to be comfortable – and you want to look good too!
You want your wedding day to be truly memorable. So make sure you feel like a queen from the inside out.
Don’t skimp on your wedding lingerie. Choosing the right wedding lingerie is as important as the selection of your wedding dress. Not only will it enhance your wedding dress, but it will also be judged later by the most important man in your life: your new husband.
With some styles such as Ballgown or A-Line, you can get away with more ruffles and lace as they won’t affect the silhouette of your wedding dress; but if you choose a slim fitting wedding dress be extra careful with garters and lacy underwear as this type of lingerie shows lines more than smooth lingerie. Likewise, if you wear a wedding dress made of clingy fabric, such as charmeuse, choose something smooth and flimsy for your wedding lingerie.
Where possible, wear the lingerie for any wedding dress alterations as the fit of your wedding dress will be affected by your lingerie.
BRAS
Begin by choosing your bra, and you need one that has the proper support. Your favourite brand may have a bra to suit. For more information about bras styles and how to choose your size or solve any problems, you might have selected a bra for under your wedding dress; see the Bra School here.
You can choose anything from nipple covers for maximum exposure, invisible bras, stick-on bras, strapless push-ups through to bustiers and corsets and full Body Shapers.
Regardless of which type of bra you choose, buy underwire if you are full-busted or full-figured.
If your wedding dress has a low or wide-cut neckline or slender straps, your best choice is a strapless bra. Many strapless bras have versatile straps that you can change or remove to suit.
A backless dress needs a bra that hooks at the waist. Let them see skin, not bra straps.
Longline bras can help slim your waistline and enhance your bust at the same time.
If you are not sure what size bra you need, you’ll find all the information on our website, as well as solutions for any problems you have, such as the centre panel of your bra buckling or only one cup fitting you. Wearing an ill-fitting bra size can really ruin the entire look of your wedding. So it’s a good idea to get professionally fitted for a bra. Many department stores have fitters, even if they don’t have the lingerie you want.
Visible bra straps may be acceptable for everyday fashion but NEVER with your wedding dress.
SHAPERS
You might want to look slimmer on your wedding day.
Body Shapers are brilliant for trimming problems areas. Make sure you buy one the correct size as you’ll be wearing it for quite a few hours. Unfortunately this kind of underwear usually doesn’t look sexy and can be uncomfortable. Still, if you have a going away outfit, you can always have a second, more attractive set of lingerie.
HOSIERY
Find a nice pair of stockings or pantyhose, good quality hosiery won’t cost you much more, but you will really notice the difference. It pays to buy a spare pair for emergencies too! Although for an informal wedding you may decide to go without. There really aren’t any rules these days.
A pantyhose-underwear combination is a good choice for a slim-fitting wedding dress such as Mermaid style. Many brides like to buy two garters – one to wear and keep and one to throw to the guests. Flesh or white hosiery is traditional, but if you opt for a coloured wedding dress, you can match your hosiery however you want.
SLIPS
A Slip will stop your wedding dress from riding up against your legs and help create a smooth silhouette. Narrow wedding dresses such as a Column style or one made of clingy fabric need a slip underneath.
Crinolines come in various widths and support a full skirt, team with a bustier under a Ballgown wedding dress for a truly hourglass silhouette.
BUSTIERS
A bustier or corset with sheer stay-up stockings is a popular choice for a sexy look. Corsets are designed to bring in the waist, and to support and enhance the bust. Some bustiers have stocking attachments, but you could wear stay-up stockings or a garter belt.
PANTIES
Panties are also important when you choose the lingerie for your wedding. Panties under the wedding gown may or may not be a problem, depending on the fit. Some styles such as Empire can be clingy and reveal
(Shock! Horror!) visible panty line!
Whereas this just won’t happen with style such as a Ballgown wedding dress.
Select close-fitting – but not tight -panties that do not show, especially if you are wearing a tight-fitting wedding dress such as Mermaid style. G-strings are great for this purpose if you don’t mind wearing them. Take a look online, and there are many sites like EBY where you can get the perfect match for your dress.
If your dress isn’t a narrow silhouette – maybe a Ballgown style, you have more choice as the panty line will not show through, and you may prefer more modest lingerie.
The other part of your wedding lingerie set will come into play on your wedding night. There are definitely no rules here! No one can say you have made the wrong choice – it’s strictly between your husband and you, and there’s a vast array of gorgeous lingerie for all sizes out there.
Let your imagination go wild.

Your Perfect Wedding Gown depends on your figure type.
Choosing the style for your wedding dress can be a nightmare. If you know you what suits your body type, you will find it much easier to choose the most flattering wedding dress. The fit of your wedding dress is always more important than the size. You can easily disguise figure faults with just a few simple tricks.
There are many different figure types, no particular shape is good or bad. Here are a some of the basic types along with some advice about the style of wedding dress that will flatter you best. The number one rule for all body types is BUY A DRESS THAT FITS. Don’t buy a size smaller than you are in the hope it will make you look slimmer.
It won’t.
Pear-shaped A classic pear shape is slim on top with a proportionally large bottom.
DO TRY: A Ball gown wedding dress with a Basque waistline and an off-the-shoulder neckline will bring your bottom half into proportion with you top half. Empire line dresses are ideal for your body shape, as the emphasis is on your top half and a flared skirt will help disguise your hips. A well fitted A Line or princess line will slim down a rounded figure, and hide wide hips.
DON’T WEAR: Avoid very clingy fabrics for your wedding dress. The Column style can be unflattering and is best avoided.
Hourglass Figure You have the classic hourglass figure. What can go wrong?
DO TRY: A bustier, you can wear a corseted or laced one with a narrow close-fitting skirt for an elegant look or a full skirt for a full on princess effect. A Ball gown wedding dress would be perfect. The Mermaid style is another style for you if you really want to show off your figure.
DON’T WEAR: Don’t overfit your waist area, it will have the effect of making your hips look bigger. Don’t wear anything too tight. Well fitting is always more flattering than tight.
Busty Your bust is a size or more larger than your hips.
DO TRY: Invest in a good bra to make the most of what you have. (See our wedding lingerie page) Alternatively you can go with a minimiser bra to help balance your figure. A well fitted off-the-shoulder bodice will suit you worn with full skirt to emphasise your waist. A square cut Empire line wedding dress can minimise you bust also.
DON’T WEAR: A skirt that is too short it will make you look top heavy. Avoid frills and ruching in the bodice. Forget bustiers with too much detail a well fitted simple bustier is more flattering.
Athletic Your body is athletic, with a small bust and undefined waist.
DO TRY: For elegance long smooth lines such as a floor length Column dress or an Empire line. If you want to add curves try a Ball gown style. The Mermaid wedding dress is flattering and can also provide the illusion of having curves if you have a leaner figure.
DON’T WEAR: Lots of frills and lace. Concentrate more on elegant lines that show off your slim silhouette. Plunging necklines are not best suited to small busts. very clingy fabrics will accentuate your lack of curves.
Thin
DO TRY: A Ball gown will suit you wonderfully. An Empire line will enhance a small bust. The Mermaid wedding dress is flattering and can also provide the illusion of having curves if you have a leaner figure. The Column wedding dress style is ideal for tall and thin brides who want a simple and sleek appearance.
DON’T WEAR: Avoid off the shoulder or halternecks if you feel you collarbones stick out too much.
Voluptuous
DO TRY: A well fitted A Line or princess line will slim down a rounded figure, and hide wide hips. If you have the confidence the Mermaid style is sensational. Make sure your lingerie is a proper fit.
DON’T WEAR: Very clingy fabrics will show up more than you want. Choose a strapless style rather than very thin straps.
Petite
DO TRY: It’s best to keep it simple. A Column-like sheath or A Line dress will work – these shapes create a long interrupted line. Stick to open, sexier necklines ( think strapless and of-the-shoulder styles,) both of which work beautifully for you.
DON’T WEAR: A huge voluminous wedding dress, you will look lost inside it. If you want a Ball gown consider a slightly shorter length, just above the ankle.
Tall
DO TRY: The Column style and the Mermaid are made for you. If you are slim the Ball gown is also flattering.
DON’T WEAR: A floor length wedding gown with a high neck line. The A Line dress can be very elongating and the Empire line can make your proportions look unbalanced.
