15 Twists on Wedding Traditions

Most couples take the traditional route when planning their weddings. After all, practices that have been passed down generations are usually the safest option to ensure your wedding progresses smoothly. The chances for complaints are few when your guests get exactly what they expect. So, you are most likely to receive a thumbs up from the older generation when you stick to the traditional format when planning your special day.

Nonetheless, there is nothing wrong in adding your own unique spin on at least few age-old traditions. What makes this special is that it allows you to still honor the tradition, while adding a personal flavor to your big day. Don’t you think this idea of giving a modern update to something classic is interesting? It will make your wedding memorable, even while you keep the essence of the tradition alive.

If you are wondering how you can do this, we have good news! You can add your own spin on almost any traditional ritual, practice or wedding task. Here are some ideas to inspire you.

Your engagement ring

emerald-1137411_640

For a long time now, diamond rings are considered synonymous with engagements! This simply goes on to say how common it is. You can always take this standard route and splurge on an ostentatious solitaire that will be impressive. However, how does the idea of finding another stone that is perhaps even prettier sound?

Visit your favorite jeweler and you are bound to find beautiful a variety of gemstones that are more interesting. Sapphires, rubies and emeralds have the same impact as a diamond. I think that a gemstone like sapphire set within a band of thin diamonds is much prettier than a traditional diamond ring. Don’t let tradition cloud your preferences. Wear it on your finger and see for yourself!

The wedding invitation

invitation-907771_640

It may be too extreme to adopt the paperless route and opt for an e-invite. This certainly doesn’t have the same charm as the hard copy of a wedding invitation sent via snail mail. Instead, switch from the paper stationery on card stock with several sheets of paper to an eco-friendly, yet functional alternative.

There are so many ways in which you can make a unique statement. From recycled paper invitations to plantable papers and even soy-based ink for the print, there are so many choices. This will allow you to invite your near and dear ones to your special day in a special way. Take a look at this article on the Ethical Bride for more ideas.

Something old, something new and Something blue

The charming Victorian bridal rhyme goes

Something old,something new,something borrowed,something blue.”

Almost all brides continue with this practice of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue as part of their wedding outfit. These are believed to be tokens of good luck. The something new is pretty simple—it could easily be the new wedding dress or accessories.

Traditional brides usually wear heirloom jewelry or veils as their something old or something borrowed and incorporate the blue as their wedding garter.

Now, here are some ideas for modern twists on the “something old, something borrowed and something blue.”

Something old: Forget the old jewelry and heirloom veil. Get creative with your something old. This article on the Bridebox website has some excellent ideas. My favorite is the idea of re-purposing a piece of family jewelry into an entirely different accessory. How wonderful would it be to wear a bracelet of pretty pair of earrings made from an old out-of-date necklace?

Something borrowed: The Borrowed and Blue blog suggests sewing a meaningful cloth or fabric item into the lining of your wedding dress. I find it to be thrilling and exciting.  You must visit the link to see how unique you can make this look.

Something blue: Don’t hide the blue in a garter. Instead, show it off! Pick a pair of beautiful blue heels for your wedding shoes. Not only will this be a beautiful accessory that you can use and re-use after the wedding, it will create a statement look for your beautiful bridal feet.

Switch out the white wedding dress

From the time Queen Victoria introduced brides to the white wedding dress, it is the signature wedding dress color for brides everywhere. Many brides occasionally opt for a wild and bold colorful alternative to traditional white. This is easier nowadays. Many designers bring out with wedding dresses in soft, muted hues that do not deviate too far from white every year. So, it is now easy to add a touch of personality to your wedding outfit with a small dose of color. Consider light pinks, blush, blues or even grays for an alternate look. This allows you to avoid a color that is too bright for a bride.

Or wear something other than a dress

If you are a bride who must wear white on your wedding day, your options to shine are still numerous. There are plenty of different bridal attires that are not exactly wedding gowns. There are little white dresses to choose from or even bridal pant suits, which are a big trend these days. While the color remains white, you can choose an attire that reflects your personality and style. Designer collections not only carry dresses with shorter hemlines, you can also find two-piece wedding dresses, well tailored pant suits and even loosely structured jumpsuits.

Unique party décor

candle-584448_640

Flowers are staple wedding décor. At most weddings, we see everything from the entry to the aisles and centerpieces with floral décor. Although flowers have an exquisite charm and are perfect as wedding party décor, they can be pricey. It is also so common, and your options to make it stand out are few.

Instead choose alternative décor elements, and the entire setting will be more memorable. Seasonal fruits and foliage are an attractive alternative. You can also opt for candles, crystals, statues and other unique décor items to make a statement. Not only are these non-perishable, you can also reuse them in your new home afterwards. And if you must have flowers in your décor, why don’t you replace cut flowers with flower pots? These are a sustainable, yet attractive option. There’s an added bonus—after using them as décor, you can even have them do double duty as party favors for your guests.

Do away with the traditional guest book

wish-box

If you feel you must have a guest book for your reception, you ought to think otherwise. Instead of a guest book that will later be stashed somewhere in your storage, opt for an attractive which you can display in your home. You can either have your guests sign notes and drop them in a pretty container, or have them share their wishes on a poster, picture or even vintage globe. There are some brilliant guest book alternatives here on the Brides website. From messages on vintage postcards to pretty pebbles, these are unusual ways to create a keepsake with your guest’s wedding wishes.

Skip the bubbly

alcohol-1282234_640

Champagne is hard on the pocket. However, few people enjoy it despite its expensive price tag. Yet, most couples keep it for their reception. The wedding toast is a tradition that is worth keeping. However, you can do it without champagne. Choose another drink for the purpose.

It is highly unlikely that your guests will miss the champagne, and are more likely to enjoy the switch. Make it more personal by choosing your favorite drink for the toast. Or, you can also make it a prettier option by serving a range of cocktails. Not only will the scenery be visually interesting, your guests are likely to enjoy this drink better than an expensive glass of bubbly.

Creative cakes

cupcake-791117_640

The wedding cake is a towering display that serves little purpose at the wedding. Many of the cakes are amazing to look at, but all that fondant and flour do not taste great. In fact, few guests have the appetite to enjoy a whole slice of cake after their main course. So, the bigger your cake is, the more quantity gets wasted. Although a classic wedding staple, I think it is high time brides and grooms chose a better option to end their wedding feast with.

One way to keep the tradition intact is to opt for a scaled-down version of a couture cake to use for the cake-cutting ceremony. Serve a variety of more appealing deserts to the party. The other option is to switch the cake out. Instead, choose from more appetizing deserts. For a whole list of options, take a look at this previous post. I am sure there is something to satisfy every bride and groom’s choice in there.

To have or not to have a different dress for the reception?

Traditionally, the bride dances in the same dress she is wed in. Nevertheless, many brides choose a new look for the reception, both for a change of style and also for practical purposes. Although getting married in a heavy ball gown or mermaid dress looks great, it isn’t the ideal choice for dancing at the reception. The modern update is the two-in-one wedding dress. It features an overlay skirt which you can remove after the ceremony, to reveal a modern slimmer silhouette beneath it. This has to be the ideal wedding dress in terms of budget and functionality.

Skip the garter toss

garter-792114_640

In the garter toss, the bridegroom removes the brides garter and tosses it at the bachelors at the party. The one to catch it will be the next to marry. To be honest, not everyone is one hundred percent excited about the garter toss. If you aren’t so pleased about it yourself, we think this is one tradition you should skip.

I like this idea on this blog of tossing something else, like a soft teddy bear or candy to the guests. Invite everyone, not just the bachelors, to be involved in the fun.

Or if you must toss the garter, how about adding a creative twist? Place it around a soccer ball and throw it instead. That ought to elicit a few laughs from the crowd! Here is a sample.

Same with the bouquet toss

flowers-260897_640

This is the cringe-worthy counterpart of the garter toss. It is highly likely that modern spinsters would not be happy to stand in line to catch the bouquet. Instead, save your wedding bouquet to be preserved as a keepsake and have the ritual with the teddy toss we mentioned about earlier. Or, you can even dedicate the bouquet to somebody special. You can thus follow tradition and give it away. Both options are undeniably more elegant than the throw-and-catch alternative.

Find something unusual instead of the getaway car

trim-1132638_640

The couple must exit in style. Nonetheless, it doesn’t always have to be in a vintage car. There are many other ways in which you can make it more interesting. Be creative and find a way to show off your personal style and fitness. How romantic would it be if your husband were to ride away with you on a bicycle. Deck it up with a flower basket in the front and a “Just married” floating balloon at the back. It will be a picture of perfection.

Guest etiquette guide for modern weddings

wedding-1571427_640

Nobody wants to deal with a high-maintenance, uncontrollable guest on their wedding day! And you don’t want to be that guest.

The couple who invites you to their wedding do so because they wish you participate in their big lifetime celebration. And it is only right that you allow them to enjoy their event. There are certain unspoken rules of wedding guest etiquette that wedding guests follow. Learn them and you can ensure that you aren’t a source of trouble for your hosts.

Today, I will tell you all the do’s and don’ts to follow when you will be a wedding guest. Take note of them and you will not disappoint as a guest.

Send in your RSVP early

Most wedding invitations require you to confirm whether you will be attending the wedding or not. There may also be a deadline mentioned on the RSVP card. Take note of it and let the couple know your plans at the earliest. Don’t overlook the importance of sending in your RSVP. The couple need it to track of their guest headcount, plan seating arrangements and other wedding details.

If you intend to attend, pop your affirmation into the mail immediately. In case you don’t plan to attend, you should still inform the couple. There may also be cases where you aren’t sure just yet. This could be because the wedding date is after a long time. Or you may have another engagement that is likely to clash with the wedding date. In such a scenario, tell the couple that you shall confirm your availability at a later date. And don’t forget to do so as soon as you know for sure.

In case of any doubt, check the invitation or website

Couples put a lot of thought into planning their wedding invitations. They usually include all the relevant details in the invitation suite. Most couples also have a wedding website, where they add the rest of the details. These may not always be in the invitation. Wedding registries, for instance, are always in the website and not in the invitation. Make sure to check both the invitation and the website, if you have any doubts.

If you still can’t find the information you require, check with the couple’s families and friends. Only if you are unable to find the information, should you check directly with the couple.

Get the bride and bridegroom a gift they actually like

This is why couples set up wedding registries in the first place! Unless you know the bride and groom personally, it isn’t wise to pick out a random gift that you think is good. There are chances that the gift you give may never be used at all. Couples list what they actually need in their wedding registries. So, there is every chance that your gift will find better use when you pick it from this list.

It is good to get your gift early, as you will have more options to pick from. As more people start choosing and booking gifts from the registry, your options will dwindle. You may finally have to settle for what is left, if you wait too long.

Send the gift to their address

The couple may not have any arrangements to take gifts home from the venue. There is enough going on at a wedding as it is. So, don’t add to their troubles by taking your gift to the venue. Your gift could be misplaced in all the rush after the wedding, and you do not want to risk that.

Send your gift directly to the address in the registry, as soon as you buy it. If the couple mention a store in the registry, they will most likely have registered there. The store may have a shipping option. In that case, simply get it done that way. If not, drop by their home with the gift and give it to them before the wedding day.

Be mindful of dressing appropriately for the wedding

Traditional etiquette suggests that you avoid wearing white or black to the wedding; white as it is the bride’s color and black for its association with funerals. While the rules regarding colors are relaxed nowadays, how you dress for a wedding still matters.

The invitation will give you a general idea of the style of wedding. Look at the venue and time to decide what would be appropriate to wear. In any case, avoid provocative and vulgar dressing as there will be people from different generations at the event. Never wear jeans or flip-flops. It is always safer to over-dress than look under-dressed. In any case, don’t go over-the-top so you steal the bride’s thunder.

Take only those who are actually invited with you

The bride and the groom plan the wedding for a specific head count. Hence, they have an idea of how many guests ought to attend their wedding. Make sure you are clear about what the invitation suggests in your case.

Unless the invitation specifically mentions a plus-one, don’t invite anyone to come with you. It is also unkind to call and ask the couple if you can bring someone. If this was their intention, they would have mentioned it on the invite or told you personally. Similarly some couples are very particular about no kids attending the wedding. Unless you are specifically invited with your entire family, don’t assume that the invitation extends to your children. It is best to make alternate arrangements for the care of your children while you go for the wedding.

Be on time

The invitation card will clearly mention the wedding time. It is important reach the venue on time and participate in the entire event. Don’t wait till the day of the wedding to check directions. Do this in advance, so you know your way on the day.

Always start early, so you have time for unexpected emergencies on the way. It is unfair to the couple if you skip the ceremony. The only exception is if you have specifically been invited only to the reception. Be considerate and reach the venue few minutes before the time mentioned on the card. This will allow you to settle down comfortably and participate in the wedding.

Respect the couple’s wishes

The couple put in a lot of thought when planning the various aspects of their wedding. One example is the seating chart. Even if you aren’t happy with where you are seated, be courteous and follow through. It will be an ordeal for the couple if you make your own changes, and is also quite impolite. So, go with the instructions and adjust to the situation.

One bride once told me how they decided to serve local wines and cocktails at their reception, instead of an open bar. There was just this one guest who created a big scene by laughing and joking at their choice. Remember that nobody is going to appreciate such a gesture. You will simply end up being a person who everyone dreads inviting. If the couple have gone for unconventional choices, respect it. It is their special day, and your opinion is not welcome unless they ask you for it.

Avoid clicking photos if the couple request it

Since everyone has a phone these days, there is a general tendency to click pictures throughout the event. However, most couples will have a photographer for the job. So, resist the temptation to document every moment of the wedding day on your phone. This can interfere with the photographer’s work, cause a distraction and spoil the moment. Instead, try to enjoy the event and let the professionals take care of the rest.

Many modern couples set up hashtags to share pictures of the event conveniently. Even if this is the case, assume that you shouldn’t use your cell phone camera during the important events on the day. This will be the ceremony, cake cutting and first dance. Use discretion when using your camera and take care it doesn’t become a distraction. If the couple prefer that you do not upload the photos till after the wedding function, respect their request.

Drink in moderation

Even if there is an open-bar, don’t get too carried away. Stop your consumption of alcohol with a drink or two and keep yourself under control.

Even one shot too many will leave a lasting impression. It will be inconsiderate to create a scene at the wedding reception, by getting out of control. So act dignified and avoid causing any discomfort to anyone at the event and spoiling the entire mood.

Make sure you greet and congratulate the couple

It can be after the ceremony, during the reception or at the end of the evening. Nevertheless, it is important that you personally talk to the couple and their family, and congratulate them.

Pay your compliments to the couple and thank them for a wonderful time. When you mention you had a great time, it reassures them that their event was a success and allows them to feel happy. Refrain from chatting for too long. Remember that they have to catch up with all the guests, and don’t keep them waiting. Also avoid complaining about anything at this time. Let them enjoy this time in their lives without worrying about anything else.

Try to enjoy the day

Don’t see the wedding as a chore that you have no way out of. Instead try to involve yourself, engage in the activities and enjoy the occasion. The best guests are those who really try to enjoy the moment and appreciate the couple’s efforts in planning it.

On this occasion, mingle with people, shake a leg on the dance floor and enjoy the food. Don’t go about complaining to others or being fussy and demanding. All you do is take away a part of the couple’s happiness on their special day, when you do this.

Be discrete if you have to leave early

In unavoidable circumstances, you may not be able to stay for the entire length of the party. However, it is bad etiquette to do so. When they extend an invitation, the couple expect you to participate in the entire event.

If you must leave early, make your way out quietly. Sign the guest book earlier on and don’t wait around to say goodbye to the couple. With so many guests at the event, it is highly unlikely they will notice.

Take home your wedding favor

It is impossible to find favors that please everyone. Nevertheless, couples put in a lot of effort and money when picking wedding favors for their guests. So, don’t be too disappointed if you don’t like the little trinkets they give out as their wedding favors.

Remember that it is discourteous to decline your gift. Respect this effort and investment and pick yours up even if you aren’t too excited about it.You can take it home and do what you like with it afterwards.

With these rules in mind, there is every chance you will be a welcome guest at any wedding party. Did we miss anything? If so, do let us know in the comments section below.

When you want your pet to be at your wedding

pets at weddings

Many of our families often include feathery or four-legged furry friends too. So, isn’t it only right that they are also included in our wedding day? After all, this is usually the most special occasion of our lifetime, and wouldn’t it be incomplete without these adorable little members

Although you can easily accommodate your pets into your wedding plans, how you do it would depend on several factors. The extent of involvement would also affect the preparations and plans. Whether you want them there as honorable guests, or in a more active role (I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen dogs play the role of adorable ring-bearers and groomsmen!) is up to you. But, before you do, here are some things to consider.

1.Does your venue allow pets?

Not all venues admit pets. So, this is an important factor to consider, if you must have your pet in your wedding. Check with the venue if it is an important factor, before booking it or paying the deposit, so you needn’t be disappointed later. If the venue you like doesn’t allow pets, either look at other venues, or think of whether you would rather include them in the wedding without them actually being there. More on that later!

2.Will your pet be comfortable in the setting?

Not all pets are calm, well-trained and happy in crowds. So, think about this factor. If your pet is always well-behaved, irrespective of the setting he is in, you may have no trouble giving him an important role in your wedding. If he is boisterous fellow who is easily excited or aggressive in crowded places, or becomes unhappy and withdrawn around loud music or children, you may like to have him participate as an onlooker. Since you will have a busy time on your wedding day, and may not be able to stay with him if he becomes uncomfortable, make sure you hire a pet-sitter or have a family member take care of him.

3.Think of the comfort and safety of both your pet and your guests

Your pet may be uncomfortable in certain settings. Unless your pet is used to crowds before, or has been in a similar setting previously, you really cannot predict how he will behave on your wedding day. Or it could be that you have wedding guests who are intimidated by animals. So, it is always recommended to prepare for any likely situation. Make sure your pet is well-cared for and nobody gets an opportunity to tease or taunt it and frustrate it. Also, let your guests know in advance about your pet’s participation, so they can plan accordingly. Putting a note about it on your wedding website, should be enough. In the best interests of both parties, it is wise to keep your animal on a leash on the day, so you can avoid any untoward accidents.

4.How will you care for him

Like we said earlier, you will have a lot going on, and it is simply impractical to tend to your pet during the chaos. So, you should make arrangements for his care during the day. Hiring a pet-sitter is the best option. This person can stay close to him throughout the day, make sure he gets his food on time, is kept away from guests, take care of his toilet needs and take him home when it is time. It is a good idea to hire this person early, so your pet gets used to him or her and is comfortable in time for your wedding day.

5.Make sure there isn’t anything that disturbs your pet

Some flowers are toxic to animals, and without you around to supervise, the risk of your animal coming in contact with it or ingesting it is higher. Keep it safe by avoiding such flowers and ingredients in your décor and menu, so your beloved pet isn’t in trouble. Similarly, make sure that he is kept away from loud noise that can hurt his ears, or from the dessert tray that he may try to stick his paws in! On a similar note, if you plan to dress your pet in a special wedding outfit, make sure it is comfortable for him. If he isn’t happy with the idea of wearing it, outfit him in a smaller accessory like an ornate collar or bow tie instead.

6.Be flexible

You cannot always predict how your pet will behave in the given situation. So, be prepared for it if he decides to ditch your plans. Even if you have planned an important role for your pet, like that of the ring bearer, make sure that you have a Plan B, in case he isn’t up for it at the crucial moment. Don’t be disappointed, rather consider yourself lucky if he obliges with your wishes and gets that far without any issues.

shakehand

Now, once you have taken care of the above mentioned factors, let us move on to the different ways in which you can include your furry friend in your wedding.

Ring bearer

The most popular, yet one of the most difficult to implement. If your pet is an obedient, charming fellow who won’t be affected by the change in scenery, and obeys instructions, you can honor him with the role of ring bearer. However, don’t risk any chances by giving him the actual ring. As this article on the Huff Post mentions, it is better that the best man hold the real ring, but your pet carry a faux ring down the aisle, just for the effect. Make sure you get him to practice walking down the aisle with the ring, several times before the actual day, so he isn’t flustered when it is time.

Groomsman or bridesmaid

An extra groomsman is hardly ever a problem, and in fact, it is the perfect role that allows your pet to share the stage with you. Designate a spot for him with the rest of the groomsmen, preferably towards the end of the line, where he can hang out and see the ceremony. If your furry friend is a female, you can have her join the bridesmaids line. Dress up your pet in a tux or skirt, only if he or she is comfortable in the outfit. Otherwise, it is best to add an accessory that doesn’t overwhelm the animal.

Photographs

One of the safest options for your pets to be in the wedding, is to join in your photography session. Outdoor shots with pets are the best, as they usually relax and this allows for great pictures. Make sure your photographer knows that you will have your pet in the photo session, so he can plan the shots accordingly. You can take portrait pictures with your pet, have him in the background, or carrying props like a “just married” sign. In case of unexpected rain or glitches like a muddy outdoor area, analyze whether it is wise to spoil your white wedding dress while posing in the outdoors. You will eventually have to spend more time if you are to get the perfect pictures, when you are posing with your pet.

Cake topper

If your venue doesn’t allow pets, but you still want your beloved friend to be part of the celebration, dedicate the cake topper to him. You can either choose to have one specifically created to resemble your pet, or go for an easily available crystal or glittering topper design in an animal shape.

Display a portrait

If he cannot be there in person, you can have him there in spirit. Blow up a stunning portrait of your pet, and add it to a central location at your venue. Nobody will be complaining about how you forgot him, when you do this. Or, you could even add a family portrait, with the three of you in it. If you want to take it further, create a picture backdrop featuring him, and take your pictures taken there. It will serve as a good-looking keepsake for later.

Pet-stamped stationery

Custom-created photo place cards, table settings or signage can be used to bring your pet’s presence into your wedding, even when he isn’t physically there. The alternative is to use printed stationery with animal silhouettes for an equally striking effect. If you are all into your pet, you can even have him included in the pictures on your save-the-date cards or invitation.

Wedding favors

This is great way to give a little special attention to your pet, and you have so many different options to do it well. Have animal-shaped cookies or candies as edible treats. Animal print or photo key chains are other ideas. Or you can customize the thank you labels with the image of your pet, and tie it to the favors. Another option is to have custom photo wrappers for milk chocolates, with your pet’s picture on the cover.

How to train your pet for your wedding day

bow dog

It goes without saying that you will need to prepare your pet in advance, for his role at your wedding. This is even more important if he has an active role at the wedding. Unless you practice ahead of time, he may shock you with an unpleasant surprise at the time, and you really do not need any more stress to handle on this day!

Here are some tips to help you prepare your furry or feathery friend for your wedding day.

1.Start training early

Rather than wait for the last minute to get your pet in action, it is best to start training him from the time you decide he will be in your wedding. So, if you want him to simply accompany you down the aisle, sit still throughout the ceremony, or even pose with you for your photographs, make sure he receives the necessary training well in advance.

2.Practice, practice, practice

Continuous and consistent practice of what we said earlier is absolutely essential to minimizing hassles on the actual day. First practice alone, then with a few people, and finally with more people. Also try to ease him into the new environment by making him practice in an environment similar to your venue location.

3.Do it in steps

Take it one step at a time, and finally get your pet to learn his entire sequence. So, if he is the ring bearer, train him to walk down the aisle first. Then teach him to hold the basket in his mouth. After he has nailed both, slowly get him to combine the two, so you get the desired result. Similarly, if your pet has to stay on the stage for a long time, help him get used to it by practicing for smaller amounts of time initially, and then slowly increasing the duration to the required length.

4.Use treats to get things done

From when you train them, to the actual day, use treats to ensure they are tempted to do what is expected from them. You can start off with lining down the aisle with treats, or giving him treats for every time they do it right. Then reduce the frequency, so it is easy to manage and he still keeps at it.

Although it isn’t easy to get all pets to get it right, you can still try and see if it will work out. If he obliges, it will be another unique factor that will make your wedding extra-special. If it doesn’t, you still know that you tried, and that is certainly better than not making an attempt at all. In any case, be flexible and don’t be hard on your pet.

14 ideas to incorporate stripes into your wedding

In a previous post, we discussed how patterns like the polka dot can quickly and effectively liven up any wedding scene. Whether patterns form the central wedding theme, or are used as an accent to the main colors, they are a pleasant addition. Some patterns like stripes can be used everywhere, from the wedding cake to the bridesmaids dresses and rest of the décor.

Stripes are an interesting update to any wedding color scheme. When it is done in moderation, this pattern has the ability to add sophistication and make a color combination more attractive. Depending on the colors and width of stripes that are chosen, stripes can make a scene look more serious, casual or contemporary. Small pin stripes and big bold colored stripes have a casual feel, while softly colored stripes have a stylish effect. Hence it is a pattern to consider using at your wedding.

Check out our top ten ideas here, on how you can add this interesting detail into your wedding.
