Well, it was 7 years into our relationship when he finally popped the question. I always told him that he would NEVER be able to surprise me. I figured the day we went to a really nice restaurant and he was dressed to the tens and nervous, I would know why. I mean, how many romantic chick flicks can you watch before you've seen every mushy, tell-tale sign a man is going to propose to his woman? And after 7 years, I knew it was bound to come soon. That, or he was bound to listen to my family ask him 6 times a year at get-togethers when he is finally going to pop the question. I think we all know how embarrassing that can get for a man, especially when my family consists of 5 aunts with very open and brutally honest opinions.
I never dreamed, however, it would end up like this: It was a cloudy day in August. It started off like a lot of Saturdays do - sleep in late, go for breakfast, have a little cat nap after eating all those eggs and hashbrowns while my boyfriend takes the few hours he can to play video games while I sleep (because then I can't complain). This Saturday was very quiet though for us. We are used to having friends of ours over on the weekend to keep us company - watch movies, run errands together, laugh and have a good time in the sun. This Saturday was turning into a great big boring disappointment. I had called our best friends Warren & Mel - busy. We called our friend Bryan who is over every weekend without fail for the past 2 years - busy. I am not a crazy energetic person who likes to hike or jog or anything, don't get me wrong but this Saturday was LAME! I was at home on a cloudy day with no friends, a boyfriend playing video games and no prospects in sight - it was making Ashley a boring girl and to put it mildly, a very moody girl. So, when my boyfriend asked if I wanted to go for a walk I was delighted to have SOMETHING to do. It was strange that he asked because frankly, we never just go for a walk despite there being a conservation area right behind our house. Again, don't judge me - I'm not an active type of person okay? But, what else was there to do? So, I asked if he wanted to bring the dog with us to get her out of the house too. He said "No. Why don't we just go for a nice walk together" I thought this was a little weird - why would you NOT take the dog if we're already going for a walk?? But in fairness, we have a crazy, hyper-active Husky/Collie mix who the previous year got off her collar on a walk and was hit by a car. So, we've been a little edgy on walks by the conservation area since. I figured that must be it. Meh. I could use a walk without the annoyance of my two year old lunatic pulling me in 5 directions at once. Let's go. We started on our walk through the park and decided we would go down to the beach. I kept saying "Honey, we better not take too long - these clouds look like it might start raining soon", but he kept assuring me it would be fine. So we walked the trail, which by the way was soaked from the rain the day before - so it was less romantic and more filled with branches sticking out and scraping my legs only to become very itchy because all the pollen and leaf ends were sticking to my legs from the wetness. But, somehow - it must have been the right day - I didn't mind so much and we kept walking. On any other day, this would have consumed our walk with comments like "Really honey? Why did we decide to walk through this wet mess of leaves and branches. They're stabbing me ... ughhhh" Yes, I'm a peach. I am lucky I found someone who wanted to marry me. Anyways, finally we reached the beach at the end and walked up to the waterline. My boyfriend was looking around while I sat at the water edge watching the waves. He said "Oh wow. Look at that." I turned to see a little blanket on the sand filled with rose petals and candles. It had two champagne glasses with a bottle. You would think this would have been a huge hint, right? Nope. This was my answer: "Oh my god honey. We need to get out of here. There is a couple here that is trying to have a romantic little picnic and we're going to be here when they get back and ruin it all. Nobody wants passerbyers when they're trying to do their thing ... God, I wish you could be romantic like that once in awhile!" Only to turn around and see him down on his knee. Let's just say I was shocked/delighted and a little mortified from my last comment. Thank God he was so nervous he didn't seem to mind at the time. He of course gave me the proposal blurb "We've been together 7 years and had the best memories of my life together. I want to continue to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you do me the honour of being my wife?" At this point I've realized this is actually for me so I'm crying uncontrollably. All I can manage to gulp out is a "Yup" (super romantic of me) and of course fall into his arms with tears in my eyes. We started to walk back to our blanket when all of a sudden I see something out of the corner of my eye headed straight for us. A little terrified I look over only to find it is our three best friends running from the bushes. Turns out, they were all busy that day because they were out at the beach trying to set everything up perfectly for us before the rain came. It was amazing to know we had best friends that would go through the trouble to make our engagement day perfect and to be able to celebrate it with our favourite people in the world. Thank God I said yes or it could have been REALLY awkward. Haha. Needless to say - we will get to spend our wedding day with these same friends by our side - how lucky. So, I told him he would never surprise me ... but he did and in the best way possible. "I Got Sunshine on a Cloudy Day" ... and it really was the best day of my life ... So far. |
