I guess the first page in the story of our life began 8 years ago when my good friend, after much convincing, swayed me to come out and meet her roommate. If nothing else, I was promised an evening of good times and so I forged my way into the night willingly. Little did I know then, that the funny, witty and charming man I was about to meet, would be the same man I'd be marrying just a 8 short years later.
And so, as fate would have it, our relationship began. As two self-proclaimed "young-at-heart" souls, marriage wasn't often a topic of conversation for us. I didn't have grandiose ideas of my perfect proposal, let alone my wedding day. When I look back on it now though, and on all of the over-the-top creative and romantic things he's done for me over the years, I should've known this proposal would be one for the books. We had purchased tickets to see our all time favourite band, Pearl Jam, at the Air Canada Centre. Nothing leading up to the concert led me to suspect in any way that he was up to something. We met friends before the show, and Aaron was as cool, calm and collected as he always is. The house lights dimmed and the show began. Cold beers in hand and my best friend at my side, it was already the perfect night ... I had no idea. About half way through the show they played my favourite song, "Elderly woman behind the counter of a small town." With the momentum of the crowd, I raised up my arms and began to sing my heart out. As I turned to Aaron to cheers him, there he was, among a crowd of thousands of people, down on one knee with his index finger extended, and on the tip of it was the ring! As he yelled over the crowd, "Marry me, Aut?" I remember my heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest. As I yelled back "Yes! - Get up! Get up!" I remember all of the people in the seats around - perfect strangers - cheering for us! There were many high-fives as they shared in our moment. It was one of the most surreal experiences in my life, and I recall thinking "If my life were a movie it would have one stellar soundtrack". As if that weren't enough, just as the house lights were about to come on, Pearl Jam played their encore "Keep on rockin' in the free world," and the very man himself, Neil Young, walked up on stage and joined them in the finale. I couldn't help but think the stars were aligned for us that night. |
