My fiancé, Marko, and I met when I was 13 and he was 15. Our fathers were friends back home, in Serbia, but we didn't know each other as kids. When we came to Canada, my dad and I went to church for Christmas, and we ran into Marko and his dad. I immediately thought he was cute! But I was 13, what did I know? When I met his dad for the first time, he asked me if I would be his daughter-in-law; I thought he was funny, and we all just laughed it off. His sister and I became best friends, and had countless sleepovers and girls nights out over the years. I always had a crush on Marko, but he was 2 years older, and I was too shy to do anything about it. But over the years we got to know each other better, and we realized that we have so much in common! After several boyfriends and girlfriends, we finally got together when I was in my first year of university, and we have been together ever since; 7 years to be exact. When we started dating we often went to Blue Mountain for little weekend trips; in the summer for hiking and beaches, and in the winter for skiing. Blue Mountain was our spot. One summer, 6 years ago, we took a little drive past Blue Mountain to Thornbury, and we hung out by the Marina. There was a dock that extends out into the water, and there was a brand new bench that was just placed there. Marko took out his keys and carved in our initials: M+J and a heart around it. Those initials have been there ever since; that was our spot, our bench, we often went back to visit. Last month, I was having a really hard time at work, so Marko decided to take me to Blue Mountain, to get away, just to relax. Since we made the plan to go 3 days before, I didn't expect a proposal. I figured that was something he would plan far in advance. Little did I know, he was just waiting for the perfect moment. On the way up to Blue Mountain, he asked me what I wanted to do first, he asked if I wanted to hiking, or maybe take a drive to the Marina? At that moment, I thought the Marina would be a great place for a proposal, but I told myself that he wasn't going to do it today, I guess I just didn't want to get disappointed. We took a walk to 'our bench' and our initials were kind of fading, so Marko took out his keys and fixed it up a little. We had a nice chat, when he reached into his pocket, and pulled out a wooden box. My heart stopped...and although I was listening, I didn't hear much of his speech. I just jumped up and started hugging him. He asked 'Is that a yes?', to which I screamed 'Yes! Yes!'. I was laughing hysterically, I was in complete shock. No one knew about the proposal, not my family, not his, not friends. It was intimate, meaningful, and memorable. It was my perfect proposal! | ||
