Ben had to be in San Francisco for work on Valentine's Day this year. I was bummed that I wouldn't be able to spend it with him, but I had other plans to look forward to. My good friend from college called and wanted to come spend the weekend with me. I was so excited and didn't think twice about the curious timing.
I came home from work and a rose and card were taped to my door. I opened the door to put my things down first, and Ben's dog, Boss, came flying at me. I was confused and asked aloud "What is Boss doing here?" Then I opened the card that read, Roses are red, violets are blue; Sorry I can't be there tomorrow, I guess Boss will have to do! I walked into my room to find another rose and card on my bed, that read, Roses are red, violets are blue; if you are noticing, this is a trend and this is #2 The next morning I found another rose and card in the kitchen, so my roommate was clearly in on the plan. This card read, Roses are red, violets are blue; did you really think I'd spend V-Day without you? Underneath was a plane ticket to California! At this point I was freaking out and only had a few hours to get to the airport. While packing I called my mom for advice on calling into work and for cancelling on Allison. She said, "Don't worry about that. They were in on the plan." Right after, my boss emailed me that I was off the hook for the day, to have a great trip and that Ben is a keeper. After my first flight landed, a technical problem delayed my connection & I ended up being grounded for seven hours! I got off the plane around 1am and found a man holding a sign for me, who handed me a rose and card that said, Roses are red, violets are blue; no need to get a cab, I've arranged a ride for you. The hotel receptionist handed me another rose and card that read, Roses are red, violets are blue; Welcome to the Fairmont, come up and check out the view. I walked into a room decorated with candles and rose petals. On the table was a fondue pot next to a rose and card that said, Roses are red violets are blue; guess what's for dinner? I made it last year, fondue. Since we missed the dinner reservation, Ben went out and bought a fondue maker and ingredients. Before bed, Ben told me he had to work the next morning but we could venture out into the city together in the afternoon. I assumed the 9am knock at the door was housekeeping and yelled to please come back later, but they kept knocking until I finally got up to answer it. Room service brought in breakfast and another rose and card that said, Roses are red violets are blue; be in the lobby at 10, I have something planned for you. While getting ready I realized that my cousin Jon lives there I'd see what his plans were for the day, hoping we could meet up. I got to the lobby, expecting to see Ben, but it was Jon. He handed me a rose and card that said, Roses are red, violets are blue; Jon is going to be your tour guide, I will meet up with you around 2. We went around the city and Ben met us before heading back to the hotel. Another rose and card were on the door to our room that said, Roses are red, violets are blue; guess who was supposed to be in LA but came up to give the 10th rose to you? I opened the door to find my brother Josh and sister-in-law Bex sitting on the couch. In front of the curtain on the balcony door, Bex handed me the next rose and a card that said, Roses are red violets are blue; we have more special guests, can you guess who is behind door number two? I opened the door and walked outside to find my parents standing next to a beautifully set up table. On the table was an iPad with Ben's parents on facetime, rose petals, candles and another rose & card that read, Roses are red violets are blue; this is the last of the dozen; turn around, I have something special for you. I turned around to find Ben down on one knee and a ring box in his hand. He said, "Jillian Brooke Rothstein, will you marry me?" I said yes and we celebrated with champagne wine and fondue. |
