When you are in your fifties you are pretty set in your ways and are particular about who you want to spend time with. How is it, that two people meet and fall in love and live hours apart and don't meet online .... children!
One of my favorite pastimes is to go to a local pub that has Karaoke on Friday nights. You get to know the regular people there and they are in a variety of age groups which makes it really fun, bringing people out of their shell. One person I met there and became friends with was Andre, who was a French Canadian that loved to sing Tom Jones songs. He would come have one glass of red wine and sing a few songs and some great conversation. On December 9, 2011 I went to Karaoke and Andre waved me over to a large table where he was sitting with a large group that I did not recognize. I sat down and he introduced me to everyone and they were all from the same family. I certainly took note of the handsome gentleman (Cyril) sitting at the far end of the table but was not able to have any conversation with him. After a while I excused myself from the table at which time I purposely walked past Cyril, at which time he said "If I ask you to dance will you dance with me?" I told him to ask and find out. Well maybe two minutes passed and Cyril asked me to dance. He commented on how much my hands were shaking (I was so nervous) and I told him it was because I was cold. Cyril did a fine job dancing ALL OVER MY FEET. He was just as nervous as me, it was like I was in high school. Once we came off the dance floor Cyril told me he wasn't looking for a girlfriend. I told him it was a dance not a marriage proposal. About an hour later I was invited back to his sons home where we all sang French songs until 4:00 a.m. We danced around the kitchen until the wee hours of the morning. We haven't been apart a weekend since the day we met. Cyril drives long distance transport truck and is gone all week, so we maintain our relationship through many phone calls and make every weekend count. I am a police officer of 25 years but am off work due to neurological problems since 2005. Cyril accepts me no matter how sick I get. Sometimes I am bedridden for days on end. When Cyril comes home he always cooks for me, cleans and takes care of me. On October 27, 2012 we decided to have a Halloween party at my home, with our friends and family. We decided to wear matching pirate costumes. I decorated for a week and we had fantastic drinks and food galore. Karaoke of course was available for all, and there was plenty of dancing room. It surprised me when Cyril decided to sing a song because he never does so we video taped him. My friend Lydia had never been to Karaoke being hearing impaired, but when she saw it at the party and could feel the beat through the floor she sang (signed) every song. This was just great. Next thing I know Cyril calls me up in front of everyone and goes down on bended knee and proposes to me before his three adult children. I was so surprised, I almost walked away! Of course I said yes! About a month later during a late night dinner I slid a ring box across the table to Cyril. Not knowing what it was Cyril opened up the ring box and inside was and engagement ring for him. I took him by surprise as he had never heard of a man receiving an engagement ring. I told him that I also wanted to show my love to him and let the world know that he was going to marry me. We never take off our rings. In the fall of 2013 Cyril sold his house and moved in with me. Although we have started our life together, we have not yet said our vows. Cyril is my best friend and I am his. We want to make our wedding one to remember and are looking at a Las Vegas Wedding.... just not with the drive through chapel and Elvis impersonator. LOL. |
