My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost five years and are high school sweethearts. He is amazing and he goes to the ends of the world for me but he continually struggles to surprise me because I somehow guess his actions before he gets the opportunity to fulfill them.
The year 2013 was a very difficult year for us because my sister was admitted into a mental hospital and became suicidal at the age of 16. Her sudden psychotic break was especially difficult for Tyler because his brother committed suicide 14 years ago. That summer I noticed him being very withdrawn and distracted for several weeks even though he went to Canada's Wonderland, a week-long road trip together, and discussing our future together. Over the summer I hinted at him proposing to me several times but he never got the hint. I got frustrated one day and asked him realistically what time range was he thinking of proposing so I do not get my hopes up for something that is months away. He told me that he would propose 6 to 18 months starting from the beginning of August 2013. On August 20th, 2013 Tyler had to work but I told him that afterwards I would like to go out for a date night. I got all dressed up for him for our date night and he took me to the beach. We walked along the strip and found a secluded place to sit and relax to enjoy the distant sunset together. He then turned to me and said "Jeannette, I love you and I am sorry that I have been distracted lately." I reassured me that it was okay and that I am here for him whenever he is ready to talk because we are both going through it together. To keep the mood light, I asked him what exactly he loved about him. He gave me a list of things and then told me to close my eyes. I thought he was going to give me a kiss but when I opened them he was down on one knee. I instantly began crying tears of joy and shock and answered "Of course I'll marry you!" We headed home to annonce our engagement to our families. It turned out that he asked my mother for my hand and my entire family including my institutionalized sister knew about the upcoming engagement and kept it a secret from me for two whole weeks. That night I asked my sister to be a bridesmaid and I promised her that we would not start the planning process until she is back on her feet. It turns out that I accidentally guessed his original proposal idea because he originally planned to take me to the annual Peach Festival and get a caricature done. The last time we got one done together was in 2010 so it did not make sense to me why he wanted another one, so I questioned him asking "What would the picture be of? You down on one knee and when I am looking at the final product you would actually be down on one knee?" I found it incredibly suiting that our engagement was so individualized, personal and spontaneous. He created the perfect silver lining for 2013, my family has something to look forward to now instead of dwelling on the negatives and all the stressful emotions. I cannot wait to start my life with this man who cares so deeply not only for me but my own family. A perfect proposal from the perfect man in my life. |
