It all started a little more than 5 years before, on a vineyard in Stellenbosch, South Africa - the land of wine, sunshine and blossoming love! MJ rented a cottage on my parent's vineyard. We became friends and would often share a bottle or two of wine and watch the African sunsets. I should have know by the ease of conversation, that it would be more than just a friendship.
Gradually, our friendship progressed and we grew closer and closer- it developed into a relationship when MJ finally plucked up the courage to put his hand on my knee at a dinner. With career opportunities arising for me in the USA, I moved to the greatest city in the world - NYC. This was tough at times with many months spent apart. Just over 2 years later, MJ got an job opportunity which included a lot of traveling to the United States - 'fate", some would say. We love our New York life together and, naturally, it provided the inspiration for our engagement story! It was a beautiful Sunday morning in the Fall and we headed to Joe's for a coffee, picked up a crepe and headed to Central Park to explore the Fall colors. Little did I know- this wasn't going to be our usual Sunday stroll. We made our way to The Pond, the Fall colors reflecting beautifully in the water and found a tranquil spot on a bench to sit and enjoy the view. I was distracted by the tranquility and score I realized what was happening MJ was down on one knee with the most beautiful diamond ring his in hand. Of course I said YES. How could I not? He is after-all the man of my dreams, my best friend, Prince Charming and sunset partner. In true NYC style, out of literally thin air, a "buddhist impersonating tourist tapper" (let's call her the "Scammer") arrived and starts giving us good luck cards and bracelets. Me still in awe, stood their in astonishment only to be asked for money ... of course we can't say no to good luck, but having lived here for four years know the "scam". As we started to repel the Scammer - a couple walking their french bull dog, iced coffees in-hand, loudly shout out at the Scammer; "Leave them the F-alone, Can't you see its the best moment of their lives". In a funny way it was perfection! Like a MasterCard advert' New chinos cause they knee is filthy; $40 Paying the Scammer to leave us alone; $50; True New Yorker saving the day, NYC Style - Priceless! Our real NYC moment ~ as we retold the story a few whirlwind moments later over Champagne with our family at the Plaza Champagne Bar we couldn't explain why it was so perfect other than it being New York City life combined into 30 perfect seconds! The day wouldn't have been complete without a romantic lunch at Marea followed by an impromptu gathering in our apartment with our friends and family! |
