Mark and I met on the football field of our high school way back in Grade 9. I remember thinking that he was extremely cute, but didn't know how to approach him! So I made up a story that I had misplaced my house key and needed a place to stay until my parents returned home from work. He excitedly invited me over for "grilled cheese". I couldn't believe that he asked me over for grilled cheese as it was my FAVOURITE food! Could it be that I had found my soul mate?! We continued to date throughout high school up until Grade 11 when we decided to remain friends but explore other opportunities. Our relationship was then based on friendship although we always seemed to find our way back to each other in between other relationships, even through our four years at the University of Guelph. During my final year at Guelph I decided that I'd like to travel and was accepted into teachers college in Australia. Mark and I had reunited that summer, and I could tell that he was sad about my plans to move across the world for a year to become a teacher.
Remaining just friends we stayed up the entire night before my morning flight across the globe. We talked about our strong friendship, love and our long history. It was then that I realized that I truly loved him. I called him from the airport while waiting for my flight to say our final goodbye and held back tears when all I wanted to say to him was, "I love you". Upon arrival at LAX in Los Angelos I decided to check my email. There I found a long email from Mark, telling me that he loved me and wanted to get back together, no matter what that meant with me living on the other side of the world. I wrote back saying that I loved him back and that it didn't matter that I was on a new adventure, I wanted nothing more than to be with him. So there we were, two worlds apart but back together. He came to visit after 6 long months and we traveled Thailand together. I knew that our love could outlive the distance and when I returned, we excitedly found a place to live in Toronto. After living in the city of Toronto for 9 months, we fell in love with the city atmosphere and bit the bullet and moved home to our parents' houses (a short 5 minute walk from each other) for a year in order to save up enough to buy a house in the city. Last June we found our dream house in the Junction and have been living here for almost a year. A week ago, Mark got down on one knee in the middle of the kitchen when I was making grilled cheese for dinner and pulled a baby carrot out of his pocket, saying "you always wanted a full carrot, so here you go!" Confusingly, I said "this better not be a joke!" and he pulled out a ring out of his pocket and proposed to me. I said yes, and couldn't be more excited to spend the rest of my life with my soul mate. I truly believe that we were put on this planet to meet each other, and it was up to us to make us work. I have been daydreaming about our wedding the day we shared our first grilled cheese sandwich way back in 1997. We are excited to be planning our dream wedding at my cottage in June 2012. |
