I did not see our engagement coming at all. Even though we were living together, Paul and I never talked about marriage. Paul hates jumping on the bandwagon. As my friends started to go ring shopping and getting engaged, I assumed that everyone would be having kids by the time we would have our first marriage conversation.
One summer day, Paul's work took him to Vancouver. He surprised me with a ticket to come along with him for some sight seeing. While there, he planned a hike up a mountain for us and two of our friends. After a few gruelling hours of climbing, we finally made it to the peak for lunch. Paul and his friend walked over to the edge, and yelled back that they could see rock climbers scaling the side of a mountain in the distance. I walked over to take a look, but "had just missed them". We stood at the edge, taking in the beautiful view when Paul told me, "You know, I couldn't have climbed this mountain without you." Being the independent person that I can't help to be, I responded, "Of course you could have!" He then asked, "Do you think you could have climbed this without me?" "Probably, although it wouldn't have been as much fun!" I still had no clue what was going on, or that I was ruining his pre-proposal speech. When I turned to look at him and found him on one knee, I was confused. It was not until I saw the sparkling ring that I realized that he was proposing. I started crying so hard that I couldn't speak, and just nodded my head. My knees went weak and I ended up joining him on the ground for a big hug. I don't remember much about what happened after that, it was quite the blur. When I finally looked up, I found our friends with cameras in hand, recording the whole event. Our relationship has always been about supporting eachother as we climb to new heights in life, perhaps I should have seen it coming. We also included some other photos of us and a Youtube video: |
