After I said an airport-goodbye to Kyle, my boyfriend of two years, I boarded my flight to France in January 2012, eager to reunite with my BFF, Kelsey, who moved to Paris last year. Together we filled the first five days of my 7-day Parisian adventure with unimaginable fun, then on the second to last day of my visit, Kelsey and two friends casually suggested we stroll over to the Eiffel Tower. We had beyond perfect weather that day, so I sauntered slowly while gazing toward the top of the monument.
As I lowered my stare back down reality and to the path in front of me, I was stunned-shocked, bewildered, surprised out of my mind!-to see Kyle standing five feet in front of me! "Bonjour!" he said, equal parts excited and nervous. "WHAT?!?!" I unromantically blurted out as I darted toward him. I smiled as the idea of what might happen next crept into my brain. "I have a question for you," he explained as he gently pried me away from the death-grip hug I didn't realize I was giving him. He got down on his knee, pulled a little wooden box out of his pocket, and uttered those heart-melting words that I'd always wanted to hear but would never fully be prepared for: "Will you marry me?" he asked. "OF COURSE!!!" I squealed, still astonished that this moment was even happening. I alternated hugs and kisses with stares of bewilderment toward my new fiancé until I realized that I wasn't even wearing the ring yet! Eagerly, he slid the stunning-and I mean absolutely radiant (although I'm a little biased)-ring on my still-shaking hand, and I could not believe what I was looking at. Could I get any luckier?! Yes! As it turned out, the friends who came to the Eiffel Tower with us weren't just there to chat and sightsee. These two accomplices were also professional photographers, who took photos of the entire proposal and even guided us in a mini photo shoot around the Eiffel Tower and surrounding Parisian cuteness! The next 36 hours were a whirlwind of calling family from payphones, climbing the Eiffel Tower to peer down at the spot I'd been proposed to mere hours before, and making the exhausting yet exhilarating voyage home to San Diego. My fiancé is SO thoughtful: he concocted the entire plan by himself, getting EVERY detail right from the bottle of French champagne he brought, to assigning himself a seat right next to me on the flight home. He is SO generous: he flew from San Diego to Paris, fully knowing he would only be there for 24 hours in between the 30 hours of traveling. And he is SO perfect for me that he knew I would adore having photos of him proposing, that I would appreciate his involving my BFF I hadn't seen in five months, and that I would melt when I noticed that he wore my favorite suit of his when he asked me to be his wife. I am still in disbelief that this fairytale dream is my real life! I get to marry not only MY best friend in the world, but THE best friend there is in the world. |
