Greg and I met at the tender young age of ten years old, but we weren't really friends to begin with. After elementary school, we went to different schools in different cities and our paths didn't cross again over the next three years. When a new family moved into the house next door one spring, my dad and I went over to meet them. As we were talking, it came up that I'd gone to the same elementary school as her son.
"Oh, you might know my son, Greg!" I won't say it was love at first OR second sight, because my first thought was, "Oh no! ... I hate that guy!" After a while though, I became friends with his younger sister. When Greg moved to Guelph with his dad a little while later, I didn't see him for another few years until our paths crossed once again - he moved back in with his mom, and this time we clicked and became really close friends. For five years we were just friends - until Greg asked me to be his girlfriend. At the time, I politely declined because I was afraid it might ruin our close friendship. But a few months went by and I realized what a good friend Greg had been to me, so I changed my mind, turned the tables, and asked him to be my boyfriend! Like any relationship though, we had our ups and downs. One particular fight we had made it seem like maybe we just weren't meant for each other. We parted ways and didn't speak to each other for weeks - and I can honestly say it was one of the hardest times of my life! We were no longer next door neighbours, but we shared the same workplace and having to see him every day knowing that things were over between us was agonizing. I was devastated - I knew we'd made a mistake and I think he did too, because we ended up getting together one night to talk about things. We realized how miserable we were apart and how much we missed one another. Together we decided to give our relationship another chance, hoping it might last. Well, it's been seven years now and time has FLOWN by. We grew incredibly closer over the years, bringing out the best in one another and making each other laugh. Greg always joked with me, saying he never wanted to get married, and I had basically convinced myself that marriage was just not in the cards for Greg. I was becoming pretty discouraged. Still, things were good between us - we would plan weekends in the city or up north at a cottage to get away together. Near our seven year anniversary, Greg mentioned something about booking ourselves into a hotel to celebrate, so I booked us the best of the best at the Sheridan Hotel in downtown Toronto. That night, we decided to head out on the town to find something fun to do. Of course with our luck, it was the coldest night in February - minus 28 degrees Celsius with the wind chill ... Brrr! I suggested we go to a bar for a few drinks, but Greg wasn't interested. He wanted to head down by the pier for a walk. I reminded him that it was FREEZING COLD outside, but agreed anyway. We walked hand in hand down to the pier at the end of Bay Street. I have to admit I was still feeling a little bit disappointed, thinking Greg would never propose ... But I was mostly concentrating on trying not to slip on the ice and snow! Oddly enough, despite the cold weather, there were still a few ducks swimming around by the pier. They quacked at me and I repeatedly quacked back before I stopped and realized Greg wasn't beside me anymore. I turned around to find him down on one knee, with the ring in his hand, asking, "Jaimie, will you marry me?" I was shocked! The first thing that came out of my mouth was, "Are you kidding me?!" He didn't get a chance to reply before I jumped into his arms, screaming, "Yes, yes, yes, I will marry you! I thought you'd never ask!" (See attached photos. The second picture is a little hard to make out, but it says on the Hotel window "We got engaged, in the heart - Jaimie & Greg, February 11th 2012) |
