I met Alex in our second year of University. The connection was instant; yes, the whole cliche of love at first sight. This October marked our four year dating Anniversary and I was unaware that this Anniversary was the one that would mark the beginning of the rest of our lives. On Thursday, October 25th, I found something that I did not think I was supposed to find. Little did I know, that what I did find, was one of the clues for my day long adventure to getting engaged....
Around 8:00 am the next day, my phone started going off. Half asleep I answered it and it was Alex wishing me a Happy Anniversary. He told me that he was sorry I was tired, but told me I had to get up and go into the next room to watch something that would explain what was happening throughout the day. I pulled myself out of bed, walked into the next room to find a bouquet of flowers, chocolate covered strawberries, and a letter (in the same envelope as the letter from the night before). I opened it up, it said he hoped I had a good sleep and instructed me to watch the video that was on the usb key. The video started with "GOOD MORNING BEAUTIFUL" and I smiled instantly. He explained I was going to be going on a scavenger hunt and that there was a series of clues for me to follow. He said I had to be on time, and I could not cheat, advising me that if I was late, there would be different clues. He also told me that I was not to text/call him all day, that he would not answer. If I had problems, I was to contact his sister. He then told me that my first clue was in the trunk of my car, but that I had to shower and get ready for the day before I checked it. I showered and got ready as quickly as I possibly could; I was even ahead of schedule. I ran out to my car, and found the first clue. It said to go to the place we first met, that there would be a photo album in the library. I excitedly got in the car and headed to the college. I searched the bookshelves and to my disappointment, could not find the album. I circled the shelves several times, as a group of onlookers stared at me with strange expressions- no doubt they wondered who this crazy girl was circling the bookshelves. I texted his sister but didn't get a response. I started to give up and walked out of the library trying to figure out what to do. Then, I saw his brother and I proceeded to tell him my difficulties in finding the album. He came into the library, asking if I looked really hard. I searched and still couldn't see it, so he looked and assured me it was there. I found it. A black photo album. We went and sat down at a table as I leafed through the album; a collection of various pictures of our relationship. The clue inside the album said I was going to meet my best friend for breakfast, and that after that, we were to go shopping. He left me $40.00 I left to meet my best friend for breakfast and texted her to let her know I arrived. She asked how excited I was and how amazing his plan was. We spoke many times about how perfect this day would be if he would just propose. She told me a fabricated story, of how when Alex told her his plans, she told him that I would most definitely be expecting him to propose, and that he should rethink his plans, as they were really over the top. She told me Alex did not think it was a problem and that he asked my best friend to assure me that it was "CUTE", but not to expect anything. I bought every word. We continued to be frustrated with how long it was going to take him to propose and how on earth he would ever top this when he did finally pop the question. The clue she gave me, said to go to my scheduled hair appointment and that someone would be waiting for me, someone who makes fun of him often. I immediately knew it would be his sister. There was $25.00 in the clue. I headed to my hair appointment, where I shared the day so far with my hair dresser. She too acted like she had no idea and was hearing it all for the first time. She also asked excitedly if I wanted her to curl my hair for the occasion. She gave me a beautiful style and sent me on my way, joking to call her tomorrow (insinuating something was happening, but quickly made it a joke). When I got out of my hair appointment, Alex's sister was waiting for me and instructed me to get in her car. Once inside, she revealed that we were going to get our nails done. The clue she gave me afterwards said to go home and check under the stuffed animal Alex bought me for the next clue. It also had another one that said to pack a bag for one night. I got into my car and flew home, wondering how I was possibly going to have time to pack. I rapidly changed my clothes, putting the new shirt I bought at the mall on. I touched up my make-up, so conscious of the way I looked; I wanted to look perfect. I double checked the clue which said someone was picking me up for coffee at around 4. My sister was the one who pulled in my drive way. She took me for tea and then we waited for my brother in law. She passed me the next clue which said that I was to go to the place where he carved our names in the tree a few years ago, that there would be a box waiting. I was nervous I would forget how to get there, but little did I know, that Alex had sent his GPS coordinates to my sister and brother in law when he arrived. I was all worried about the box, scared that someone would steal it or that it would be ruined in the rain and wanted to get there ASAP to see the next clue. I got nervous as we got closer, the drive felt like forever. I searched around the park, wondering where on earth he was, until I saw him in a building. I picked up my bag and waved goodbye to my sister and brother in law as they "drove off". I walked up to Alex, very casually, with my bags in tow. He looked amazing. Up on the ledge was a comforter, with a wooden box and a rose on top. There was a candle infront but it had blown out (I also missed the line of candles down the centre of the building). Alex commented how sad he was that the candles kept blowing out (it had been rainy and windy all day). I walked to the box and knelt down, smelling the flower. I opened the box and inside was a necklace with two keys, and a note that read "the key to my heart". At this point, I could feel my heart start pounding in my chest. He always joked that when he proposed, he was just going to get me a key instead of a ring, that it would be the key to his heart. I slowly picked up the necklace, trying to calm myself down/prepare myself, as I was scared this wasn't the moment, and that my heart was about to be broken (after all, everybody had convinced me all day that it wasn't going to happen). The next thing I knew, Alex was on one knee, with a ring in his hand. I threw the keys in the box and yelled "SHUT UP". His response was a smile, as he said asked me to marry him. I had the worst response ever, asking if this was actually real, and saying no friggin way! I then said yes, and wrapped my arms around him to kiss him. My brother in law came running in snapping pictures. As we released, Alex held the ring box out to me and I noticed it was THE ring. The ring I had tried on over a year ago and fell in love with; the same ring he let me try on just a few short weeks ago. Alex then drove us to a hotel where we spent the night. He opened the door to the room, looked in, and then looked back at me and smiled. He told me to go in first. I dropped my bags and grabbed my heart, as I saw the room completely decorated. Rose petals and fake candles were set up leading a path to the bed. On the bed were rose petals spread out to spell marry me. There was a bouquet of roses and more chocolate covered strawberries. He thought of absolutely everything and I could not have asked for a better proposal. I am so excited to be spending the rest of my life with the most incredible man in the world! |
