I knew very early into our relationship that Lindsay was the only one for me. So, when I started working full time out of college I started saving for the ring that I would eventually buy for her. When some friends asked us to join them on a trip to Beaufort I decided I would also use that time to propose to Lindsay. The trip was all planned out and the week we were supposed to leave we suddenly realized we had not made plans for our dog, Sky. Neither of our parents were able to keep Sky that weekend so I suggested we board her. Sky had never been boarded and if you know Lindsay and her love for Sky there was no way we were leaving her in a kennel.
After we had to cancel that trip, I was really disappointed but I couldn't tell her why. So, I immediately started planning another trip for me to propose. We decided to go to Washington DC since Lindsay had never been. We asked our friends, Taylor and Samantha, to join us for a second attempt. Since I had not been to DC in many years, I had no clue where to propose which made me even more nervous. I rented a limousine for us to "go to dinner" on our first night. I asked the driver to take us by some of the memorials at night so that Lindsay could seen them, but specifically told him to stop at the Jefferson Memorial because I had read how beautiful it is at night. Lindsay was clueless to any of this. Now let me tell you, when you are planning a proposal on a trip where you are sharing a hotel room things can get tricky. We were leaving for our trip from my parents house since we had been visiting them for Christmas and I had to get my mom to sneak into our room while we were sleeping and stick the ring underneath the lining of my bag. And once we were in DC and leaving for dinner I had to purposely leave my cell phone and wallet in the hotel room so I would have an excuse to run back in the room and grab the ring while everyone was down in the lobby. Luckily, everything went according to plan. When we arrived at the Jefferson Memorial we all got out and took some pictures. Even as Taylor and Samantha both began getting their cell phone and camera ready to capture the action, Lindsay remained clueless. And when I asked Lindsay to walk down to the water with me, across from the Washington Monument, because that was where I was going to pop the big question, she laughed and said "what are you going to push me in the water?" It was just the comic relief I needed because even after being together almost three years I was so nervous. I don't think either of us really remembers what was said that night, but I told her that I loved her, wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, and then asked her to marry me and she said yes! It's funny now when we look back in retrospect because there were so many things that should have given her hints at what was about to. For instance, I wanted to be sure that everything was perfect and I had read online that most girls will want to have a manicure when they get engaged because they will be showing off the ring and will want their nails to look nice, so the day before we left for our trip I came up with a clever idea. I asked Lindsay if she wanted to go get pedicures together (she is always trying to convince me to go) so she was thinking that I had finally given in. She got so excited and immediately started getting ready to go. When she was ready to head out the door I told her that I had actually changed my mind but didn't want to let her down completely so I would take her to get a pedicure and manicure if she wanted. Of course she didn't turn the offer down, and she was so thrilled the next night that I had done this. |
