I had just defended my Master's degree and I was exhausted from all the writing and studying that I had done in preparation. The past two years had been truly trying. Josh knew this and so he cleverly took advantage of my fatigued state to persuade me to take the Saturday off and allow him to just treat me. I did not think much of this as he had prepared such surprises in the past, and so I happily agreed with one restriction - that I can sleep in.
It was Friday evening and I called Josh to ask him what the dress code was for the next day's events. Josh informed me that I should dress comfortably, but have 'nicer' clothes to change into, "Oh and Sweetie" he continued, "can you be ready for 5:30?" "Sure, so we'll be out for the evening. What time do you think we'll be home?" "Umm, well actually, 5:30AM Sweetie." "WHAT?!!! JOSH!!! 5:30AM" "You won't regret it" he emphasized. "Well then goodnight" I said, despite the early hour. But in reality I was suddenly suspicious - 5:30AM, Josh had surprised me, many times before, but never on the brink of dawn. Could this be it? I quickly got in touch with two of my girlfriends who have known me for years. "Josh has been planning something and he's picking me up tomorrow at 5:30AM, do you think this could be it?!!" "Marz, you're over thinking this" Jen and Denise said to me, "it's a treat he's preparing for you, you said he's done this before, there's nothing abnormal here." Their logic was sound and so, I shrugged off my suspicions. 6:00AM we're pulling out of my driveway. I'm all cuddled up in the front seat teasing him for the crazy hour, but inside I can't help the curiosity. After some time of driving Josh says to me, "Do you know where we're going?" We had just passed the Forks of the Credit River. "I'm not sure" as I finished that sentence I realized I did know, "Tobermory!" We had been there a few times that summer and Josh knew I loved it there; I had spent a many childhood summers along the Georgian Bay. It was 9AM when we arrived in Tobermory and it was raining. Josh looked worried and he pulled out a duffel bag from the backseat and led me to a boat cruise kiosk. "I made reservations for a boat cruise for today to Flower Pot Island" the lady at the kiosk shook her head, "I'm sorry all cruises are cancelled for today on account of strong winds" "Alright, thank you" Josh replied, but I could tell he was very worried. "Let's go for a hike then" he said, "we have to go hiking today" as he finished that sentence it began to pour. I wanted to go for a hike, no doubt, I loved hiking and after all, we we're in Tobermory! But the fact was, it was pouring. "Well, how about we have breakfast and then maybe the cloud will pass" I reassured him. After breakfast Josh and I drove to the Bruce Trail. It was nothing short of a miracle that the raining had ceased and some hints of a Sun broke through the dense grey clouds. "Sweetie, could you do me a favor" Josh said to me as he clung onto his duffel bag, "can you have a look at the trail maps on the board and find one that we haven't done yet." I blissfully ran over to the board and found a trail that I thought would be reasonable considering the wet conditions. Josh came up behind me and gave me a hug, "Found one?" I pointed out the trail to him and we were off. Despite the weather there were several people on the trail. Suddenly Josh took my hand and led me to a side trail, "Let's go here, we've never seen this trail." There was no one on this trail and we walked for a few meters until we reached a rocky beach. My hands were getting cold so I slipped my hand into Josh's jacket pocket, he quickly took my hand and said, "I think your pocket is wider" and slipped both our hands into my pocket. I would beg to differ, but I was too happy to start comparing the volume's of our respective jacket pockets. If you've ever been to Tobermory you know that the sights are breathtaking. And at this moment we reached a point on this white, rocky beach that was truly awe-inspiring. I was so happy and serene, but I could tell Josh was nervous and stressed. "Are you okay?" I asked, "Yeah, let's try to get closer to the water." "Sure Sweetie" I replied. We skipped from rock to rock, holding hands, until we stood at the very shoreline. "You know, life will be like this sometimes, rocky," Josh began and I couldn't help but feel a sudden dryness in my throat, "but as long as we have each other, we'll be okay. And I know I always have you, and I know you know, you always have me. So I wanted to ask you, will you do me the honor" at this point Josh was on one knee trying to balance against the wind, the oncoming wave and his trembling nerves, "of being my wife?" I threw myself onto Josh and couldn't restrain the sudden flow of tears, and neither could he. We had been together for nearly 6 years and I couldn't imagine my life without him. The best part was, I didn't have to. |
