On May 10, 2013, I went to work like every other day. My boyfriend Chris and I had made plans to go out for dinner that evening to the Keg for my birthday celebration. Chris had told me that he would meet me at my house after work and we would have some time to hang out before going out for dinner. At 4:30pm I walked through the door of my home expecting to see Chris already there and waiting for me, but he wasn't. Instead, I was met with 100 balloons dancing on the ceiling of my home, streamers hanging down in front of me and a "Happy Birthday" sign on my wall. They covered my ceiling! I noticed a beautiful bouquet of flowers on my coffee table with an envelope which said "Open Me". In the envelope was a letter from Chris. In the letter he expressed that he loved me very much and wanted to "make this day special" for me. He told me to go into my room and get all dressed up, and meet him downstairs at 6:45pm. I couldn't believe he was so organized to plan all of this! When I walked into my room, I felt like a princess because laid out on my bed was a stunning silvery, blue dress with a necklace, earrings, cardigan and matching shoes. Not only were they beautiful, but they fit perfectly. I then got a message from my sister, Charisse telling me that she was stopping by to "drop off my birthday present". When she arrived, I showed her the wonderful surprise that Chris had left for me. She was supportive but so calm that I had no idea that she was in on the plan! Her real purpose of coming over I found out later was to help me get ready for my big night, and take pictures, which she did. Finally ready for my birthday dinner, I went outside to meet Chris. Though it was raining, he was so handsome standing there to greet me in his suit with an umbrella. On our way to the restaurant, I noticed that Chris was driving the wrong way. All of a sudden, he pulled out a blindfold and told me to put it on as the destination was now a surprise. My heart started racing as I wondered where we were going. When we arrived, Chris instructed me to take off my blindfold. We were at a small restaurant that I was not familiar with. Inside, we were led to a small empty dining room with three tables. I made a comment about how lucky we were to have a private room, only to find out later that Chris had specifically requested that weeks before. Dinner was delicious and I was thinking about how lovely of an evening I had and how thoughtful Chris had been for my birthday. Little did I know that there were many more surprises in store for me along the way! While eating our cheesecake dessert Chris asked me what my birthday wish was. Then he said "do you want to know what my wish is?" He started talking about his future which quickly became his wish of OUR future together. Then, before I realized what was happening, Chris had gotten up from the table and was on one knee beside me holding out a ring asking, "Siobhan, will you marry me?" In shock and so absolutely surprised I asked, "Are you for real?" His response was quick and so was "yes!" As I was so overcome with excitement and emotion. Only when the server returned to our table and Chris turned to him and said "Jack, she said yes" did I realized that the whole staff of the restaurant knew of the proposal! On the way back home, or what I thought was the way back home, Chris looked over at me and said "I'm sorry. I have to do this to you again" and handed the blindfold back to me. "Oh my gosh", I laughed. Again, I put the blindfold on and put my trust in Chris that he would not lead me to the edge of a cliff or throw me out along the drive. He said to me "I always thought that if we were to get married, I would want to show you something that is truly special to me." Finally we arrived and Chris led me out of the car. When he told me to take the blindfold off, the surroundings looked familiar and there were double doors in front of us. All of a sudden they were thrown open and with many voices in unison shouting, "SURPRISE!" There in front of me was a room decorated for my birthday party, our engagement party and Chris had invited all of our friends and family! Music started playing and everyone was clapping. I was so overwhelmed and overcome with emotion, I began to cry tears of joy, hugging and accepting congratulatory and birthday wishes from everyone. Through the tears of emotional and animated conversations, I was able to notice so many extra details that Chris has planned out. Not only did he plan for a live DJ, open bar and buffet but he also made two custom cakes. My birthday cake was a stunning Cirque du Soliel theme cake which is my favorite show, and the engagement cake was a replica of where we first met with little figurines of us on top of it! Chris gave me the most perfect proposal that I could ever dream of. We partied into the night and celebrated in the excitement of our families meeting and our upcoming union. The love from our friends and family was the truly special thing that he wanted to show me. The love I felt on that day is a feeling that I will cherish forever. |
