As all our good friends know, Britlandt and I have been talking about engagement and marriage for quite a while now. Most of our friends from Humboldt made comments like, "finally," or "took you long enough" when it finally happened. Though I was also very excited, the actual proposal caught me entirely off guard.
Lets start way back about one year ago: Britlandt told me that I had to get SCUBA certified before we got married. I decided it would make the most sense to do it during school, since Humboldt State offered a SCUBA program that I could take as a college class and get college credit for. Great idea, right? I got certified fall semester of my senior year. Going back even farther -- apparently I had a dream over a year ago that Brit proposed to me while we were SCUBA diving. I told him about the dream, he (unbeknownst to me) was frustrated because this had been his plan all along. I didn't think anything of the dream. As usual, I forgot I even had this dream and continued on with normal life. I probably had several other proposal dreams over the course of our dating life. The last proposal dream I had was while we were in Tahoe this summer with Brits family. The difference was, this dream was awful. I had a dream on the night of Sunday, August 4th, that Brit proposed to me while we were sitting on the couch watching a movie. He said something quite unromantic like, "Hey, wanna marry me?" while pulling out a hideously ugly white fuzzy ring that looked straight out of a gumball machine. The following day, Monday August 5th, I told Brit about my terrible dream less than two hours before we were scheduled to dive at Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe. He told me, with sincere sadness in his voice and eyes, "Elle I am so sorry... I know you were expecting me to propose on our Tahoe trip, but I am not going to. I don't want you to be looking forward to this the whole time and then get disappointed when it doesn't happen. I have a great plan, I promise, but I would have to change my plan and make it less great if I proposed during summer, and I don't want to do that." Convincing, right? Well, I believed him, and was a bit sad because he was so convincing. Everyone had told me to expect it in Tahoe, because Lake Tahoe is so romantic and there are so many great spots to propose and have romantic moments. But, that was not to be my fate. We moved on and prepared for our dive. As we got in the water and started descending to our dive, I was having some serious problems equalizing my ears. Brit --my dive partner on this dive-- stopped and waited for me as I signaled to him that I couldn't clear my ears. I was so focused on getting my ears functioning, that I didn't even notice when Brit went down on two knees at the bottom of the lake. When I finally looked down, there was my boyfriend, on two knees, smiling up through his regulator with an open clam shell with a beautiful ring inside attached to a red ribbon that said "I Love You" all around it. I instantly started crying. Which was really quite difficult underwater. I knelt down next to him, ripped out both of our regs (which really wasn't smart, now that I think about it) and kissed him. After that, we put our regs back in and he motioned for us to slowly go to the surface together. When we got to the surface, the love of my life asked me to be his wife, and put the ring on my finger. Now, you might think this was the end of it and it was very unique and romantic, but no, he did more than this. When we finally got back to the beach, my parents were there taking pictures and smiling, waiting to greet us with open arms. I had no idea my parents would be there, and was totally shocked to see them on the beach. After all the hugs, kisses, and congratulations, we all sat down to talk and Brit explained to me how he picked this day to propose. This day, August 5, was the day my dad proposed to my mom 33 years ago. He really did think of everything, didn't he? |
