The first time I laid eyes on Jackie, she was hosting a karaoke show on stage in a bar. Being the hot DJ she is, I was sure many guys approached her, but I took my chances and asked her out to dinner. To my surprise she said yes! Now, we hadn't planned on it, but our first date ended up being on April Fools Day; April 1st. I took her to a sushi restaurant even though I didn't eat seafood but had found out this was her favorite. Everything was going great, until Jackie was called to fill in at another karaoke show. I said I didn't mind, so we continued the date during the show. We ended up having a blast, and in my opinion the first date never truly ended. 3.5 years later, we are happier then ever! She's truly the light in my life. After moving across Canada together, getting a new apartment and jobs, we now both run the karaoke business. Every show we host together is like being on our first date all over again. It's wonderful! So it was only fitting that I propose during one of our shows. On the night I had planned to propose, I wore a t-shirt underneath another shirt that said, "Will You Marry Me?" At midnight during the show, it would also be Jackie's 28th birthday (Sept. 3) so when the clock struck twelve, I exposed my t-shirt and got down on one knee. The moment was so exciting as everyone jumped up in the bar and started snapping pictures all around us. Once I put the ring on Jackie's finger, she then took off her shirt and exposed a tank top that read "YES!". I thought maybe she had just been wearing that tank top for the past 6 months or more (we had done some light ring shopping about 8 months before the proposal). Turns out, Jackie's sneaky and had called some ring stores in our town which we had visited. She actually tricked one of the stores into telling her that the ring I had chosen for her was on layaway. She called in to inquire about using a gift certificate on a recent ring purchase, and then gave my last name to have the purchase pulled up on the computer at the store. Before the store clerk had realized what Jackie was doing, she had already given out the information over the phone. My sneaky Jackie! So although she knew the ring was on layaway all summer, she technically didn't know when I would propose (perhaps I shouldn't have proposed on her birthday). After the proposal, I went back to the ring store and let them know what had happened. The store felt really bad and offered to give us a discount on the wedding bands. Apparently Jackie was the only girl to call in and attempt to find out information like that (if you're a future bride, don't ruin the surprise by doing this!)
I had the entire proposal captured on video so we could remember the moment forever: In keeping with our first date, we set our wedding date for April 1st , 2012; April Fools Day! I used to joke with friends and family in saying that our relationship has just been a really long April Fools joke, but I supposed once we're married I'll have to stop that ;) Keith Kozak & Jackie Oldford (soon to be Mrs. Kozak) Jackie's side note: Ok, yes, I'm a snoop! But I couldn't help it! I wanted to know if he was going to get the ring I wanted! I sort of regret calling the store, but sort of not. If I could go back... perhaps I wouldn't have worn a shirt that said "YES", but at any rate, the ring is on my finger and Keith and I are madly in love and can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together :) That's all that matter. |
